Charlie Baker - Republican

Martha Coakley - Democrat

BIOGRAPHY: Charlie Baker is 57 years old. He was born in Needham, MA. Baker was the Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services from 1992-1994 and Secretary of Administration and Fianance from 1994-1998. Baker was a successful CEO for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care.

 

POLITICAL VIEWS: Baker is a moderate Republican. He has some conservative, as well as some liberal views.

 

STANCE ON THE ISSUES:

SOCIAL ISSUES: Baker is in favor of a woman's right to an abortion and is also in favor of gay-marriage.

EDUCATION: Baker is in favor of more spending on education

BUSINESS: Baker would like to cut business tax to 5%

CRIME: Baker is in favor of stricter punishments to reduce crime.

TAXES: Baker is opposed to higher taxes on the wealthy. He said no new taxes while he is in office.

IMMIGRATION: Baker is in favor of stricter restrictions on illegal immigration. Baker has said that people should be able to provide proof of citizenship before recieving any benefits from the state.

BIOGRAPHY: Martha Coakley is 61 years old and is from Pittsfield, MA. Coakley was the District Attorney for Middlesex County from 1999-2007. Coakley has been the MAssachusetts Attorney General since 2007.

 

POLITICAL VIEWS: Coakley is a more liberal Democrat. She is liberal on almost all issues.

 

STANCE ON THE ISSUES:

SOCIAL ISSUES: Coakley is in favor of ritghts to an abortion as well as gay-marriage rights. 

EDUCATION: Coakley is in favor of funding for public schools.

BUSINESS: Coakley does not want to take businesses for granted. She pushed anti-trust laws.

CRIME: Coakley favors stricter punishment for crimes to reduce the crime rate.

TAXES: Coakley is in favor of higher taxes for the wealthy. She wanted the Bush tax cuts to be more for poor rather than wealthy.

IMMIGRATION: Coakley is in favor of extending in-state tuition to children of undocumented immigrants. 

Coakley is also in favor of immigrants getting jobs, no matter their citizenship status.
